A surprising use for essential oils

Today I’m going to talk about a SURPRISING use for essential oils. It’s a delicate subject so hold on to your seats. We have tested this over and over, and much to our surprise, the oils work! Don’t get me wrong, essential oils always provide benefit on most ailments we have, but I never would have thought of using them for this one particular use. Read on.

So what is this surprising use for essential oils? Let me ask you another question, have you ever heard of Poo-pourri? I never had until I read someone’s blog post on it. Basically, you spritz Poo-pourri in the toilet water before going #2 and there will be no smell. REALLY?  I had to try it for myself.

I didn’t order the product because according to the website, it contains essential oils. I have plenty of those! So, using my son as a guinea pig, I dropped 4 drops of Eucalyptus oil in the toilet before he used it. I was pleasantly surprised: I could only smell Eucalyptus when he was done! Experiment after experiment came out with no smell. Wonderful!

So how does it work? The essential oil forms a film on the surface of the water thus trapping the odor underneath. When you flush, you only smell the wonderful essential oil instead of the other. I’m really liking this!

Since I don’t like my children to handle the glass essential oil bottles, I use a stainless steel sprayer bottle from the Container Store. I use 8 oz of water mixed with 25 – 30 drops of essential oils. You can also add a drop or two of glycerin into the mix if you’d like. I use eucalyptus for the kids and lavender for the adults, but you can mix the scents to your liking. Some suggestions for use are:

  • Lemon
  • Peppermint
  • Lemongrass
  • Bergamot
  • Grapefruit
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Melaleuca or Tea Tree

Remember to shake the sprayer bottle before spraying because oil and water don’t mix. Then squirt the water 3 – 4 times before sitting down.
